The Pedagogical Problem

Randomized cold-calling is a proven method to ensure equitable participation and maintain student attention. However, standard online name pickers are often rigid. As a teacher, I needed a way to assign specific weights to students (e.g., subtly increasing the probability of selecting a quieter student) and I needed a reliable tool that wouldn’t lose my class lists every time the browser tab was closed.

The Technical Solution

I built a pure front-end web application utilizing HTML5 Canvas and vanilla JavaScript to create a smooth, visually appealing spinning wheel. The core engine features a custom text parser that allows educators to easily input weighted names using a simple syntax (e.g., John:2 to give John double the chance). Furthermore, the application leverages the browser’s localStorage API, ensuring that class lists and settings persist seamlessly across different teaching sessions.

Classroom Impact

The dynamic visual feedback of the spinning wheel introduces an element of gamification and suspense to cold-calling, which actually helps reduce student anxiety compared to traditional methods. More importantly, the hidden weighting feature allows me to implement subtle, differentiated instructional strategies—ensuring all voices are heard while keeping the classroom environment energetic, fair, and highly engaged.
