Praxis: Open-Source Social Practice Platform
The Pedagogical Problem
Managing and tracking student social practice activities across an entire school is often an administrative nightmare. Relying on paper forms or disjointed spreadsheets leads to lost data and inefficiencies, while commercial educational management systems are frequently bloated, expensive, and not tailored to the specific needs of our student body. Furthermore, computer science students rarely get the opportunity to build software that actually solves a localized, real-world problem within their own community.
The Technical Solution
Instead of purchasing off-the-shelf software, I collaborated with our student developer community (HBBSS-software) to engineer a bespoke solution: Praxis. It is an open-source, reliable, and fast management system tailored specifically for social practice administration. By treating the project as a real-world software engineering endeavor, we utilized modern web development frameworks and standard industry practices, managing the entire lifecycle openly on GitHub.
Educational Impact
The impact of Praxis extends far beyond administrative efficiency. For the student developers, this was a pinnacle Project-Based Learning (PBL) experience. They navigated version control (Git), issue tracking, UI/UX design, and peer code reviews in a production environment. For the school, we gained a highly customized, free tool that streamlines activity management. It stands as a testament to what students can achieve when given agency and a genuine problem to solve.
